Do You Need New Windows Instead?

Do You Need New Windows Instead?

At Outlook Double Glazing Repairs Glasgow we only repair, however if a window needs replaced we will always tell you. So, here’s 5 signs your windows might need replaced: 1. Safety No doubt the most important reason is safety. A few signs for needing a new window is when they don’t lock properly or have developed new gaps or broken seals, making it easier for criminals to exploit for entry. We will always check locks, gaps and seals are repairable before recommending a complete replacement. When windows are close to the floor, they require tempered glass, much like you get protecting a modern mobile phone screen! Much like old mobiles not having tempered glass protection – old windows can often be the same and are no longer up to code. You can see more on our Safety blog post here. 2. Noise Soundproofing isn’t a big deal in a sleepy suburb, but for those of us that live near a main road: vehicles, passing people, school kids, dog walkers… or even if you’re in a flight path; noise can be the major difference with relaxing in your own home. Double glazed windows are vastly more efficient at keeping out noise compared to single glazing, but if there are repairs or replacements needed that let more noise in, what’s the point? Have us check your windows and doors for necessary repairs. They can more often than not be repaired before resorting to a new unit. See our blog post on noise and draughts here. 3. Looks A damaged window can really show up an otherwise attractive property. They’re also responsible...
Protecting Your Belongings

Protecting Your Belongings

Typically, the most important things in life are your family and your home. Home security is something none of us want to compromise on. In todays modern world, the days of leaving your front door unlocked is a thing of the past. You can never know how opportunistic or desperate a passer by can be. With only 1 in 10 burglaries being solved by police in the UK and with Glasgow often having the highest crime rate in Scotland, it’s important that all aspects of home security are taken seriously. We spend fortunes on doors, windows, locks, CCTV and so on to protect ourselves from the outside world but we often fail to repair latches and handles on our windows, seals and gaps that make it easier to access our home. With insurance premiums being at an all time high, it’s important not to compromise the safety of our belongings when we’re either out or sleeping at night. Double glazing should not be exclusively about what looks the best, keeps you and my family warm, is energy efficient and the right price – we need to be mindful of neglect and age of our double glazed units. We recently fixed a patio door that wouldn’t close properly. Are their any access areas of your property that need a potential repair, making it secure? How often are fixing these issues put off at the potential expense of your families’ safety and your belongings that you work hard for? Take your home security seriously and don’t let a lapse in affirmative action be at a greater cost.   Double Glazing Repairs...
Double Glazing Repairs & Efficiency

Double Glazing Repairs & Efficiency

What do we mean by improving efficiency? Well, it’s all about either maintaining temperature or using the least amount of energy possible to either increase or decrease the temperature of an environment. Decreasing temperature tends to be easier, anything from turning the heating down, turning it off, to opening a window for more drastic drops. However, maintaining or increasing temperature efficiently (particularly in Glasgow!) is more difficult. Unsurprisingly the most common route of lost heat is through windows and doors, so it’s important your double glazing repairs are carried out to ensure maximum efficiency. This should always be a preferred route before a complete replacement is considered. You can call us for a free survey of your windows and we can advise on the best route. Also, by insulating your windows effectively, you’re not only maintaining temperature more easily and saving money – you’re also contributing to fewer greenhouse gas emissions, so much better for the environment. UK homes are second only to factories for energy wastage, with up to a third of households haemorrhaging energy that could be utilised more effectively. With double glazing, the cavity is typically filled with argon gas, designed to prevent heat from passing through the window. Damaged windows can leak argon and lose their integrity through this, over and above the damage itself. Not only this… Having these things repaired means things such as traffic, road noise and general outside noise is improved or eliminated completely. If you need any help or advice, don’t hesitate to give us a call for recommendations on what to do. If you need any double glazing repairs, call...

How can you minimise condensation in your windows?

How can you minimise condensation in your windows?

When moisture builds up in double glazing units, it’s usually down to broken seals as covered in one of our previous posts. However, condensation occurs when the air hitting the window is warmer than the glass itself. That’s why if you leave the door open in the bathroom when you go for a shower often the windows in the rooms close to it steam up. The warm air has travelled and hit the cold glass window. This means ventilation is key. Big deal?! No, seriously, it can be. In poorly ventilated properties moisture can become mold and mold can cause damage to your windows, your walls and even you! Asthma and breathing problems to name a few problems. It’s not just warm showers, either. The likes of cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, even boiling your kettle will cause warm, damp air to roam around the house. How Do I Fix It? Make sure you open your windows when you can. If this isn’t possible at least open the trickle vents or use an extractor fan (if either of these options are available). Dry your washing outside (again, when you can) as damp items draped over a radiator is asking for serious moisture and the resulting condensation. Keep your food covered when cooking and avoid constantly boiling your kettle. Whatever your doing at the very least close the door and prevent the moisture from spreading around the house. Taking a second to consider these small changes will help the health of both you and your home long term and help minimize double glazing repairs needed in future. Hope that was helpful,...
Excessive Noise & Drafts

Excessive Noise & Drafts

Are you experiencing excessive noise? Feeling drafts? Perhaps you can you hear people taking in the street or road noise that you probably wouldn’t expect to? Windows & Doors Getting Tired As windows and doors get older, it’s natural for the seals and hinges to lose their effectiveness over time. Sometimes it’s really obvious with a big gap somewhere, however the trained eye can see it doesn’t look right if the damage is a little more subtle. Solution? Sometimes you just need some new weather seals, however, if the windows are quite old, often a new pair of hinges are required instead of the seals. Both are, of course, much less expensive than a replacement window, so we would always exhaust these (and any other fixes) first. This is the same with doors that are becoming quite difficult to lock. If you need to push the handle up quite far to get it to lock then it’s likely the whole door needs realigned as the door has become a sort of rhombus shape. It sounds unusual but you have to take the glass out the door to realign it. This works every single time! Need Advice? At Outlook Double Glazing Repairs Glasgow we are Glasgow’s longest running double glazing repair specialist, with 40 years in the trade. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any sort of repair work in the Glasgow area. Call: 0141 638...
Double Glazing Repairs – Repairing Seals

Double Glazing Repairs – Repairing Seals

Double glazing, as most people know has two sheets of glass instead of the one in single glazing. The void between them provides the insulation, which is usually a vacuum or gas. This is very effective as a double glazed unit has 3 times the heat retention than a single unit. Double glazing repairs are often down to damaged seals. Damaged Seals Your seals usually get damaged due to the change in temperature over the course of the year because they expand and contract. Cleaning the windows with harsh chemicals also doesn’t help. Less common, but what we have seen a few times in the past is poor installation. Be sure to take the latter up with whoever installed your windows first before seeking double glazing repairs. When the seal on the outside fails, moisture gets in between the double glazed glass. Usually starting in a small corner but can gradually build up, covering the entire window. Can I Do My Own Double Glazing Repairs? We’ve had calls a few times from customers who have tried following online instructions or a YouTube video on how to do the repair themselves. As you can imagine we don’t really recommend this for a few reasons. Firstly, as mentioned above you should give the original supplier/fitter a call first and make sure you don’t have some sort of warranty or free call out service with them. Secondly, you risk damaging the window itself. The least cost effective is getting a complete replacement. The energy saving from having a new window for a damaged seal won’t balance out against the cost of the replacement...
